Recycle Always - Project 1

Did you know that there are more plastic than fish in the ocean, as of today?

"Many Americans prefer to buy their bottled water in bulk, purchasing an estimated 2.6 billion cases each year."

I have unintentionally saved about 150 or more water bottles as I was lazy enough to not recycle or throw them away. However, this has come to make me realize that the amount of water bottles I use as one person, is a LOT. So for this project, I tried to imagine what it'd be like to have a display of water bottles being protested. The overall idea of the project is to make people realize how many bottles of water one human can make. It's quite unfortunate that during the process I wasn't able to use all of my water bottles, but I managed to get at least 20+.

INSPIRATION

First I assessed some examples online to see how the outcome of the look of the water bottles, also known as, my inspiration:

DESIGN

For the design I came up with the idea of a shape of a fish to represent the amount of fish that die because there is more plastic in the ocean than them, so why not have a plastic fish. So I created a photoshoped model to visualize my desired shape:

AREA

The area in which it would be placed was going to be located in STRAZ laundry waiting room. The reason I chose this area was because it was near two vending machines, which are one of the reasons for water bottles. And because it is a lightly trafficked study area. It's also a private area so that my model will not be tampered with or stepped on.

DIGITAL PROJECTION

I wanted something to go along with what I was trying to say, which is "there is too much plastic in the ocean" ; so I made a design in after effects the look of water. In after effects, I used the '4 -gradient' plug-in, changed the colors to variations of blue, added the plug-in 'Starburst', and decreased the amount of white dots, and blurred them a little.

For the program Resolume, I used a wavy transition to match the waves and just to add another digital component to the design. I really like this as it shows on the water bottles really well.

BUDGET

Now I realized that size and amount of water bottles, as well as how I was going to make them stick together was the issue. So I tried assessing my funding options:

Beginning Estimated cost:
Water bottles = 0$ (provided by me)
super glue = 12.99$
tape = 0$ (provided by a friend)
PC VGA adapter : 39.99$ (cause my computer is a PC)

total: = 52.98$

Unfortunately, I was unable to use the glue, but my friend provided me with tape, so overall my budget was 39.99$ spent.

FINAL PROJECT IDEA:

For my final project, I want to do something that incorporates my animation skills as well as my love for horror. I think that for my last project I want to project many white boxes of various sizes in a space that can be dark, and project hands and faces of ominous figures, to look like they are coming out of the walls.
