FINAL PROJECT PROPOSAL

PRECEDENT ARTIST

"In a World of My Own"

Eugenia Loli is a vintage collage artist that uses magazines to create visual narratives. She exploits a sense of bizarre surrealism and style that is very different than other artists. In choosing background images and people doing random things there is humor and bizarreness to her creations. Instead of adding smoke to a flying jet she adds wrapped candy falling from the sky; instead of a woman sleeping on a bed there is an entire landscape of mountains. She describes her work as having a "narrative" by depicting a grand scale of either sarcasm, danger, or a chill vibe. Her use of imagination and fulfillment of color and shape brings a uniqueness to a dreamlike world.

In order to create a more visual and higher resolution image Loli uses photoshop as her medium. Rather than cutting magazines with scissors, she uses a more tech involved skill with this software in order to share her pieces of art with the click of a button.  Her philosophy is to give freely and be able to share her work globally with as many people as possible. These collages come from her own imagination of what it would feel like to be warped into these drastic scenarios. Her emotions and own utopia of thoughts is what makes her work incredibly memorable.

In my project I want to display different backdrops to come together into one imaginative surrounding. By using landscape videos there is an advantage in different mild textures that could be made to have a pattern within the use of color. I hope to find a creative path in understanding the different elements of the clips to recreate a feeling. The sort of feeling one gets when looking up at the sky and transforming a cloud into a heart or a bunny. For this feeling is pure imagination.

All Lolis works has inspired me to come up with this concept, due to her primary choice of technique being collage. Though one work caught my attention because of her selection in nature, " Elysian Fields". In this collage she chose to incorporate hills, an ocean with a red landscape, a ship, a petal-like object, and planet-like one. Her idea of channeling all these images into a fantasy is what inspired me to come up my own.

I do not plan on using any people or even objects, but rather the motion of water, the roundness of the sun, and the speed of the subway to be the prime attention factor in my installation. In choosing my personal videos of the ocean, sun, and subway moving at different speeds forming triangle shapes onto the canvas will add a different dimension to all three of these clips. In aligning different shapes of the video or zooming into parts that I want to be shown in a different perspective will help in achieving this idea of a dream.
I also plan on experimenting with color and a more thematic approach that correlates with a fun aesthetic. My choice of paper layouts will add a uniqueness and complex feel to my depiction of a fictional place. The inner rectangle pieces in the layout are clustered that will eventually form an inward spiral feel to the entirety of the design. In filling this space with the subway and transforming the outer layers into the ocean; the installation will give off an intergalactic sense of a swarming environment.
Loli's choice of high contrast and grain feel is my similar way of making it feel like pop art. By using aftereffects, I do plan on lightening the different masks to have a more realistic approach, while keeping that textured high use of color. Though my idea is not incorporated into a still by still animation process I am still using aftereffects and photoshop to align shapes and coordination of color. In mapping the shapes and utilizing my space on the composition it will help determine what is important within the narrative process.
This three-minute video will play a loop of waves, a subway approaching the forefront of the canvas, and a sunset in a moving car. Though Eugenia Loli works with images and all ready-made visuals, I am hoping to give off my own perception of movement with my own clips. In a time of isolation and social distancing there is so much precaution within everyday mobility. I am bringing the outside world indoors with the hopes of bringing a twist into perspective and imagination. Through Loli's pride of storytelling I am hoping to do the same.

PRECEDENT IMAGES

Different places being conjoined to appear as if it was all one. From different points and perspectives its provides understanding of what is going on.

I will try to incorporate shape patterns within the different animation. The battle between what could be seen as real or up for interpretation.

Ocean, land, and sky all being interpreted into one display. Though mine will be incorporated with shapes I want to give a similar feel to them being all conjoined into one.

How a collage of different surroundings could be used in order to create one interpretation or feeling using different layers. A template of color and abstract feel is what I'm going for in this project.

One of my videos is a sunset in a moving car. This will be displayed in parts due to the colors and movement of the sky.

This gif shows the same angle of the subway as my clip. I am hoping to use the movement to add a sense of depth and movement to all of the videos.

A moving interpretation of a train. I am hoping to focus my video in a specific spot of the composition so that the viewer doesn't loose understanding of what is happening as a whole.

An embark on nature. Through a moving installation of the environment is how I'll be able to convey what It's like to be in that space.

The creators choice of shape and arrangement of each piece is a sort of disordered fashion. My installation will have this same feel due to the different media being played all at once.

This installation shows a cohesive mapping of the different long rectangular shapes. They achieved this by forming a precise position to each canvas.

RENDERING

Rendering(30/150 points)Two-dimensional images or animations showing what a proposed installation would look like. These may be hand-drawn, photoshop, and may or may not incorporate computer-renderingsor basic animated content. Each proposal should include two (2) or more static renderings showing differentperspectives and content, and one (1) animated rendering depicting example or finalcontent in place on top of a photo or video of the final installation site.Photoshop Rendering 101Good renderings typically include the following:BackgroundA photo of the location where the installation would be. This image can be stylized tomatch the method in which the installation itself is depicted, or altered to create acertain mood. For installations that incorporate light, it is usually best to include arendering on both a daytime and nighttime photo.InstallationThe most important part of the rendering is the installation itself. Depending on howdeveloped your concept for the installation is, you may choose to depict the installationin various degrees of detail, using various illustration methods. The point is tocommunicate the general look and effect of your installation, not the exact details.PeopleAdding photos or even just outlines of people to photos helps to give the viewer asense of scale, and an understanding of how people would occupy and move through aproposed installation.Rendering(30/150 points)Two-dimensional images or animations showing what a proposed installation would look like. CONCEPT

general overview

I have decided to create a collage of different atmospheric video elements to align with the paper layers. In aligning each video into a triangle format will portray a sense of dimension and abstraction towards the final arrangement. This concept will display the outside world in all its glory. The sun, the ocean, and land in a time where quarantine was not apart of everyday mobility. Using aftereffects and photoshop to shape and find the prime focus of the overall project will be my biggest challenge. Finding an arrangement that fits and makes it look overall cohesive will be a main objective to the final look.

location
I don't have a projector. For that reason the project will be sent through email or any online portal.

installation objectives
The purpose is to reveal the simple aspects of our surroundings as something grand. Showing bits of these environments into a full moving display will project as not only aesthetically pleasing, but to draw attention to a state of hope through COVID-19.
